My dad read about that in newspaper and we went there on 18 March because I haven't seen that before. There were so many people...It was a very nice and interesting... Sad thing is that it bid farewell tonight (26rh March). There will be a similar show, I think. It may be Songs of the Sea.. but admission is not free ($6) and I haven't been there. Enjoy some of the photos I have taken there...

A beautiful evening and results are out

This photo was taken about a week ago. I was returning from VC meeting and I noticed the very vibrant and wonderful colours of the sky. The colour of that evening sky was very nice. So, I hurried to home, took my cam and went downstairs hurriedly, went around my house and took many pictures. This is one of those shots.

Let's go back to today. I woke up late this morning because I was watching Manchester United Vs Europe XI match at around 4 am. I only watched first half and went back to sleep again as the match was very boring. Most of the players didn't play with their full strength. It may be because of a friendly match. Man Utd won 4-3.

When I woke up, I felt a bit dizzy and sleepy. At around noon, I was reading the SMS that I received after April Sem which informed me about the exam results. I received that message one day before the actual date for releasing the results. So, I was hoping I could get my results today. Then, around 12 plus, Ryan called me and informed me that results could be viewed at TP website.
I felt very excited to know my results because I was worried for WDS and IISO. But, my results were very good. I got distinctions in 6 subjects and B+ for CMSK3. I felt very happy and informed dad and mom and called my grandparents... They all were happy with my results.
I should continue studying hard for the coming semester in which the work load will be heavier than Year 1.

The beauty of Black and White Film Photography

Here is a selection of black and white photos I have taken, developed and processed. All photos were taken using Nikon FM10 film camera and Kodak Tmax400 film. I developed the film in VC darkroom and print on photo papers. Then I scanned the printed photos. So the resolution and quality of photos may not be as perfect as printed photos.

In my opinion, Black and white photography deals much more with light. While shooting photos, I need to check the brightness and lightness of the scene. Unlike digital cameras, I cannot review the photo I have taken in film camera. Therefore, I could not tell whether the photos are in correct exposure or not. Moreover, the camera I was using is totally manual. I need to turn the dial to roll the film every time after taking one shot. All shutter speed, aperture size, ISO settings and focus are manual. There is only three signs +, 0 and - to indicate the exposure of the scene. So, it depends on the experience and skill of a photographer to shoot nice shots.
Then, I needed to develop the films in the darkroom. The most difficult stage is the time when I need to roll the films on to film reels to be processed. That process must be done in total darkness. All lights in the darkroom are switched off and I couldn't see any thing at that moment. That darkness makes the reeling process more difficult because I could not see anything and the film de-rails on the reel so many times. It took much time.
After that, the remaining steps are easy and standard. Need to wash the container that contains the film with many chemicals such as developer, stop bath, fixer, etc. in many rounds. It took about an hour to finish.
Then, the real excitement comes when the container was opened. I could see the images on the negative!!! But, the negative was put in the drying machine for about 10 minutes to dry completely.
Then, can print the photos on special papers which contain chemicals on its surface. The printing process also must do in darkness because the photo papers are also sensitive to light. But this time, it is not total darkness. Safe lights (very dim and red or orange in color) can be switched on.
Black and white Film photography deals with light two times. First time, is while shooting when the light passes through the camera lens and hit the film. The second time is while printing. The light from photo enlarger passes through the negative film and hit the photo paper. But, nothing can be seen immediately after that time. Similar to film, the photo paper must be developed using chemicals. It is needed to be soaked in 3 different chemical solutions and the process takes about 3 to 5 minutes. Then, I need to go out of the darkroom and see the printed photo.
Black and white photography improves my understand of exposure time. The brightness of a printed photo also depends on the duration of time that the photo paper was exposed with light. The photo will come out very dark if it was exposed so long and the photo will be very bright if the duration was so short. As I have few experience of darkroom, I need to print a shot several times to get the correct exposure. A black and white photograph cannot strong enough to attract viewers if its brightness and contrast were wrong.
I was not satisfied with the results of the printed shots. I sense that something was lacking. I should learn more about it and gain experience in much more darkroom sessions.
Film Photography requires much skills of a photographer than digital photography...

VC Informal Shoot

Back to Film today. I used 2 rolls of black and white film to shoot with school's Nikon FM10.Went around the City Hall Area for a VC informal shooting with my 3 fellow VC members. This was my second time shooting black and white. Unlike first time, I gained few knowledge of photography such as aperture, shutter, ISO, etc.

So, I hoped my shoots will turn out better than those I shot very first time when I was very new to SLR last year. At that time, I didn't know all the manual funtions at all. As a result, after developing films in VC dark room, most of my shots were underexposed...

Can't wait for this coming Wednesday when I'll develop the films I shot today and may be enlarge some nice shots... Eager to regain the feeling of pulling out the film from the roll in the totally dark dark-room, washing with chemicals... index printing using different lighting during and so on... Very interesting... =)

In today digital world, films cameras seems to lost porpularity for almost customers. But, in my opinion, film camera can produce better resolution compared to digital cam. Although, it may take a few days to develop and print the shots, the whole process of developing the films is interesting and you will never know how good or bad your photos will turn out after processing especially black and white shots.

Let's go back to the today's shoot.. Walked around the Clack Quay areas to shoot first. Then at about noon, went to the new shopping centre called Central near Clark Quay. It was very new and only some shops were opened.

Then, went to KFC at Funan Mall to have luch. After that, walked around the old court, to snap some shots... The weather was very hot... Felt a bit tired... Then, went to the Esplanade, and sat and watched a performance of Huayi Festival there.

Waiting

Then, went to the roof top of the Esplanade and shot photos... Then proceeded to Suntec and Millenium Walk.

Walked back to the City Hall via the City Link. Suntec was so crowded because of a career fair and travel fair... We walked walked and walked and I felt tired... Went home at about 530pm. Felt tired and sleepy on the MRT and bus...

In short, today informal shooting was a very interesting and I gained some knowledge about photography from Serena and Suan Yang. Looking forward for more VC events like this one in the future...

Will upload some photos I shot today when I finished the darkroom session...
